Physical fitness is a measure of your body’s strength, endurance and flexibility. The cardio-vascular system needs a healthy heart and lungs to deliver oxygen to all parts of the body quickly and efficiently. The challenge is how to motivate yourself to get fit and stay fit.
Dance Active is a fun and energising workout. The benefits of exercise are combined with the fun and vitality of dancing delivering an abundance of energy. There is always something new to learn so your brain gets a work-out as well as your body.
The programme, developed by the late Leigh Brewer, combines pilates, yoga and dance. Twice a week classes improve and maintain fitness - you start gradually and build intensity over a 12 week period. You choose to walk, jog or run depending on your level of fitness.

Set dance sequences engage your brain. Patterns can be challenging but regular repetition means they are easy for non-dancers to learn. You do one or two patterns at a time and repeat the movements until the whole choreography is linked together. A variety of music helps to keep you motivated.
As well as 5 or 6 dances, each 60 minute class includes warm up and cool down routines. These incorporate posture, balance and toning work. Pilates-style movements strengthen muscles and stretch exercises improve flexibility.
It’s so much fun that students return year after year. Check out some of their comments.

About Us
Sandra taught Leigh Brewer’s Aerobic Dance for many years. “When a friend introduced me to Leigh’s programme I took to it like a duck to water. It was wonderful for building fitness, flexibility and strength while having fun dancing to fabulous music. My classes are a significant part of my life. They keep me healthy and sane.”
When Leigh died, Sandra was able to carry on using Leigh’s material with the permission of her estate. Today she is privileged to continue Leigh’s passion to provide a physical fitness experience that “whispers exercise and shouts fun”.
Gill danced with Leigh for many years. She also used her design background to work on a number of dance projects with Leigh. Gill accepted the challenge to continue teaching Leigh’s classes when Leigh passed away unexpectedly. As well as teaching Dance Active classes, Gill dances with the Crows Feet Collective and she is a trustee on the Youthdance Education Trust which currently runs International Dance Day as an annual event at Te Papa.
